Kelly Trevethan, Founder
The grandson of Italian winemakers, Kelly inherited his family's passion for wine and wine making. It was this passion that inspired Speratus Winery. Most recently, Kelly and Speratus winery have launched a new philanthropic project. Speratus donates 100% of their profits to provide scholarships for at risk and low income young men and women, and to provide an opportunity for them to attend Lasallian high Schools throughout California.
Kelly started his Wealth Management career in 1983 at Bear Stearns & Co. and has earned the designation Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA), and the Investment Strategist Certificate from the Investment Management Consulting Association, completed at The Wharton School of Business at The University of Pennsylvania.
In September of 2008 Kelly launched Trevethan Capital Partners, Now United Capital, (A division of United Capital Financial Advisers LLC), a National Private Wealth Counseling Firm (www.unitedcapitalsf.com). The National Association of Board Certified Advisory Practices announced on March 16, 2012, that Kelly Trevethan's firm has been designated as a premier advisory practice in the San Francisco, Silicon Valley and North bay & Marin county areas.
From 1995 to 2008, Kelly managed The Trevethan Group at Oppenheimer & Co. , where he was a Managing Director of Investments with the firm and was a member of the Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. Chairman's Council, a prestigious recognition awarded to their top Financial Advisers.
Kelly also co-founded The Physicians' Financial Resource Group, a team of financial advisers whose broad financial services platform focuses on sub-specialty physicians and medical groups.
He is a past member of the Saint Mary's College Board of Regents, Investment Management Consultants' Association (www.imca.org), the Financial Planning Association (www.fpa.org), the San Francisco Estate Planning Council (www.sfepc.org), the National Committee on Planned Giving (www.ncpg.org). Mr. Trevethan is a member of the De La Salle High School President's Advisory Board (www.dlshs.org), and also on the board of Alpha Omega Winery (www.aowinery.com).
Jean Hoefliger, Co-Founder, Winemaker
Jean Hoefliger was born and raised in Switzerland. His initial experience took him from Switzerland to Bordeaux, and South Africa, making wine at the esteemed estates of Chateau Lynch-Bages, Chateau Carbonnieux, and Meerlust. Completing a wine making and viticulture degree at the Swiss federal school of Changins, Jean came to California where he spent five years as winemaker for Newton Vineyard. While at Newton Vineyards, Jean’s Epic Merlot received 94, Puzzle 96 points from Robert Parker, as well as acquiring a phenomenal 97 points with his 2003 Unfiltered Chardonnay.
After Jean’s time at Newton, he was approached by a new project, Alpha Omega, to build a brand as Winemaker and General Manager. In under six years with the company, there have been multiple accolades from press and customers on the quality of wine and experience given at Alpha Omega. Most recently, with the first vintages of Alpha Omega, their flagship wine ERA has been an industry favorite—scoring 94 from the Wine Spectator on the 2006, 2007 and 2008 vintage. The Wine Spectator also gave the Alpha Omega 2007 Chardonnay 94 points, and the Beckstoffer To Kalon received 97 points from the Wine Enthusiast.
In 2005, Jean began working as a Consulting Winemaker for different wineries and chateaus in different parts of the world – from Napa Valley to Switzerland to Italy. The brands include Clark Claudon, located on Howell Mountain (2007 received 95 points from The Wine Advocate); Decades 5 100% Petit Verdot from Stagecoach Vineyard (2008 received 95 points from the Wine Spectator and 94 points from the Wine Enthusiast); Armanino Family Cellars, which has Pinot Noirs from Santa Lucia Highlands, Russian River and Santa Rita Hills, as well as Cabernet from Napa Valley (2009 Hunter received 91 points from the Wine Spectator); Maldonado Family Vineyards, a family owned winery producing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cabernet from Napa Valley (2007 Chardonnay received 92 points from the Wine Spectator); Virage, a small production winery producing a ‘Right Bank’ Napa Valley blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot as well as a Rose’; Speratus, a small production winery whose proceeds go to fund scholarships at De La Salle High School, Justin Siena High School, Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory and Saint Mary's College of California. Monteverro, an Italian Chateau located on the southern tip of Tuscany with their inaugural release in 2008 (2008 Monteverro received 93 points from the Wine Advocate); and Zanolari Wines, a Swiss project making Pinot Noir and Valtellina.
Jean is also Consulting Winemaker for the following brands which were released in 2013: The Debate, three single vineyard 100% Cabernet Sauvignons from Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper, To Kalon and Dr. Crane; Michel Rolland’s first Napa Valley wine; Red Hawk Tail; Sunshine Valley; and Audace Wines.
Jean’s passion, knowledge, scientific training and innate ability put him in a unique position to take the best grapes from around the world and transform them into wines worthy of world class standing.
