If you love great wine and value the importance of an excellent education, you will want to take a moment to savor an opportunity that sounds too good to be true. Imagine that you can obtain the newest wines created by one of Napa Valley’s best winemakers. You can select a Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc or a Chardonnay. You can purchase these wines for a fraction of what the winemaker’s best known wines cost. You can buy these unique wines online with the click of a mouse! The proceeds from the sales are for a single purpose, to fund scholarships that allow needy families, who do not possess the financial ability, to send their sons or daughters to Lasallian schools.
This is not a fantasy. It’s here, and it’s now, and the wine is Speratus, a name derived from the Latin word sperare, which means “to hope.” Why “hope”? Because hope is what this venture in bold yet prudent fundraising will provide. “Our hope,” says De La Salle President Mark DeMarco, “is that Speratus will be a major piece in the puzzle that we are continually working on – which is how to keep this great Catholic, Lasallian education accessible to those who need it. Each year the need for financial aid increases. Help is needed not only for low-income families but also for many families of ordinary means who have to stretch and strain to pay the cost of a Lasallian education. We need to find ways of funding the mission on a sustainable basis, and Speratus offers hope toward that end.
